Dr. Michelle Byrne graduated from University College Dublin in 2004 and became a Member of the Irish College of General Practitioners (MICGP) in 2012. She has worked as a GP in both Ireland and Australia, returning to County Laois in 2013. Initially based in Mountmellick, she later joined Dr. Honan’s practice in Portlaoise — now known as Maryborough Family Practice (MFP).

Dr. Byrne has played a key role in the growth and development of MFP, which now provides care to approximately 10,000 members of the community. She was also an active member of the Portlaoise Hospital Action Committee, helping to ensure that the Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, retained its essential services.

Passionate about medical education, Dr. Byrne is actively involved in the training and mentorship of GPs and medical students.

As Chairperson of the Laois Chamber Alliance, Dr. Byrne is committed to fostering prosperity within the community and local business sector. Her vision is for a vibrant, connected, and thriving Laois — a place where residents and businesses can flourish and enjoy all that this wonderful county has to offer.

“Working together with our dedicated CEO, the LCA Board, and all our members, we aim to help our community and businesses develop the skills and connections needed to thrive in a changing world. We are fortunate to build on the excellent work of the previous Board, led by former Chairperson Fiona Hyland, whose leadership has positioned the Chamber for continued success.

This year’s vision includes a ‘Spirit of Laois’ fundraiser celebrating local pride and generosity, a Business Expo showcasing enterprise and innovation, and a Future of Work event in partnership with Laois County Council early in the new year. By investing in future skills, strengthening community links, and fostering cooperation, we can secure a bright future for Laois. Together, we are stronger.”

Laois Chamber Alliance represents the voice of business, community, and tourism across the county, promoting Laois as a great place to live, work, visit, and invest.
